Teaching Modality in Blended Learning Environment

Simon Thomson - BA, MSc, FAETC, NTF, SFHEA, ADE - Director, Centre for Innovation in Education - University of Liverpool

With a track record for developing and supporting digital pedagogic practice in Higher Education through project-based and action research, his academic career has been dedicated to advancing teaching excellence (even before it became fashionable) and his work is entirely focussed on improving the staff and student experience in a learning and teaching context, often in relation to “digital”.

He has led on a number of funded learning & teaching research projects including a JISC/HEA funded OER project as part of the Phase 1 UKOER programme, an institution-wide pilot of tablet devices evaluating the impact of 1to1 tablet device use, a HEFCE funded project exploring the next generation of digital learning environments and more recently as principal project lead working with the British Council supporting six Peruvian Universities to ‘pivot’ to online teaching during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Simon was awarded an HEA National Teaching Fellow in 2014 in recognition of his work in Open Education and Digital Pedagogy. He is also a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, SEDA accredited in Embedding Learning Technologies and an Apple Distinguished Educator.

We find ourselves in an emerging post-pandemic landscape where a “new normal” is not quite as clear as we might have presumed and is still very much part of sector and institutional discussions. The OfS has launched a review of blended learning with a report due in the Summer of 2022. Nicola Dandridge (OFS CEO) states:

There are many ways for blended courses to be successfully delivered and it will be important to harness the lessons learned by the shift to online learning during the pandemic.”These are indeed important discussions for Universities and yet despite the pandemic demonstrating the value and importance of digital environments and tools there is still a lack of uncertainty around the extent to which institutions will be move towards a “blended by default” position and even some criticism of them doing so.

This session will draw upon an emerging framework for discussing and developing hybrid/blended education. The SPaM framework is an intersection between three core domains of Subject, Pedagogy and Modality and in this session we will specifically examine the role of expertise and tools in learning environments and technologies in relation to teaching modalities.

Are we in IKEA, PC World or a Classroom? Learning and Teaching in Flexible Spaces

Malcolm Murray - Head of Digital Learning, Durham Centre for Academic Development

In this workshop (held in a flexible space) we will experience the architect’s interior decoration decisions and explore first-hand the opportunities and challenges such rooms offer. As universities and colleges try and “tempt” staff and students back on campus after the forced pivot to remote learning, institutional spaces are being viewed more critically. In groups, we will unpick questions such as: does the technology in the room empower or distract the learner (and lecturer)? How does the institutional provision compare and connect with the personal kit amassed whilst working from home? Can we include remote participants in ways that give them a presence in the room and a sense of agency? Through our own efforts and insights, we should be able to answer the question whether the room layout dictates the activity – can we use these spaces for lectures, meetings and groupwork?

Malcolm works in the Durham Centre for Academic Development, based on the top floor of the Teaching & Learning Centre. Originally a biogeographer who worked in the mangroves of Belize, he now leads a team of digital trainers, developers, learning designers and education consultants who provide support to staff and students across the University.

Lisa Stephens | Mark McCallister | Rebecca V. Frazee

Lisa Stephens  - Asst. Dean, School of Engineering & Applied Sciences – office of Online Education & Sr. Strategist, SUNY Academic Innovation - University at Buffalo, and State University of New York (SUNY) Office of the Provost

FLEXspace and LSRS are two OER tools available to assist with planning new/renovated learning spaces. A frequent challenge is encouraging stakeholders with different areas of expertise (AV/IT integrators, facilities planners/architects and faculty/instructional support staff) to understand and empathize their respective roles.  The presenters will share a new FLEXspace Integrated Planning Pathway (FLIPP) that will help align internal campus strategy and priorities prior to engaging external contractors.  We will share information from our “Tools, Traits and Teams” presentation that dovetails with the FLIPP – where we examine common issues that arise when planning spaces.

Trialling hybrid teaching during a pandemic - SCHOMS Short

Jon Stothard - Interim Head of Service - Teaching Spaces - University of Leeds

The brief :  Run a trial of hybrid teaching. Install the equipment in a variety of classrooms and lecture theatres to evaluate what size/layout works best.  Test a different AV setup in each room to find the best kit for large scale rollout.  Do this during a global supply chain crisis and with ever changing rules on who could be on campus.

The result :  Not as bad as you may think!

Jon Stothard has 20 years' experience in the educational AV sector.  He was recently appointed Head of Service - Teaching Spaces for the University of Leeds.

Evolution of AV requirements at the University of Strathclyde

Campbell Jamieson - Learning space support manager - Strathclyde University

The University of Strathclyde has welcomed the first students into its new Learning and Teaching complex, a £60m refurbishment of two buildings from the 60s and 70s.

A sophisticated Audio Visual installation was specified to flexibly accommodate many different modes of teaching and groupwork within the building. However, the design was completed, and construction was well under way, when our world, and our teaching technology requirements, were turned upside down by Covid-19.

In response to these constantly changing teaching requirements, the facilities being installed within the building have evolved greatly from that initial specification.

Campbell will give an overview of the facilities in the new building, and discuss how the specification has evolved by designing design templates that can be used within a variety of spaces allowing the university to standardise there AV real estate.  He will discuss and demonstrate some of the newer facilities, enabling multiple modes of teaching, to local and remote audiences, from the same space. They will highlight the changing technical skillsets required by the audio-visual professionals who support our teaching colleagues.

They will present from here and one of the teaching spaces, you will be the remote audience!
